To install WeaselWorks you only need a WordPress website you can manage and a few minutes. WeaselWorks is a normal WordPress plugin: there is nothing to host and no new service to sign up for, and your team's work stays in your own website.
In short: check that your site runs WordPress 6.4 or later and PHP 8.0 or later, upload the WeaselWorks zip under Plugins › Add New Plugin › Upload Plugin, then click Activate.
What You Need Before You Install WeaselWorks
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| WordPress | 6.4 or later (6.5 or later for WeaselWorks Pro) |
| PHP | 8.0 or later |
| Database | MySQL, MariaDB or SQLite |
| Your access | A WordPress administrator account |
Not sure which versions your site runs? In WordPress, go to Tools › Site Health › Info, or ask your host.
Install WeaselWorks in Four Steps
- Download the plugin zip. Keep it as a zip file; don't unzip it.
- Upload it. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins › Add New Plugin, click Upload Plugin, choose the zip and click Install Now.
- Activate it. Click Activate Plugin. A new WeaselWorks menu appears in your dashboard.
- Set it up. Head to Organization Settings, then create your first Workspace.
WordPress has its own guide to managing plugins if this is your first time uploading one.
Tip: every new Workspace starts with a Getting Started Board and a welcome task, so your team never opens an empty screen.
Updating WeaselWorks
To update WeaselWorks, back up your site first, then upload the new zip the same way. WordPress replaces the old version and keeps all your Boards, tasks and settings. Any database changes are applied by themselves.
Using WeaselWorks Pro too? The free plugin and Pro always share the same version number, so update both. See Adding WeaselWorks Pro.
After an update, clear any host cache and caching plugin, then hard-refresh your browser. If something still looks old, see Something Looks Out of Date After an Update.
Common Questions
Does WeaselWorks change my theme or login page?
No. WeaselWorks runs on its own pages and never replaces your theme, your WordPress login or other plugins' pages.
Can I try WeaselWorks on a test site first?
Yes. Install WeaselWorks on a staging or test copy of your site, try it with your team, then install it on your live site when you're ready.
What happens if I deactivate WeaselWorks?
Your data stays in your database. Activate WeaselWorks again and everything is where you left it.
